| What a piece of work is man |
Name: Cloud Strife Age: 21 years Profession: Knight Allegiance: Prince Jephry |
| How noble in reason |
Cloud Strife was never meant for great things. He was born to a woman in one of the outlying districts of Narborough. He never knew his father- but he often dreamed, as a child, that he was perhaps the son of someone great, someone powerful, someone who would one day take his mother and him out of the poverty they lived in. His dreams remained dreams, eventually fading away as he grew up. He doesn't remember if he's ever told anyone of them- and the only person who would be likely to know of them is Tifa Lockheart, his childhood friend. As children they played together in the streets of Narborough, but they grew apart once Cloud joined the militia. Even as a child, he had always admired the knights of the Kingdom, the defenders of peace and justice, and had promised once that when he was older, he would become one of them. At fifteen, his mother died, and with no where else to go but the streets or the militia, he ended up leaving the slums for the city. In the militia, Cloud turned out to be remarkably skilled at handling a sword, easily establishing his position as one of the most talented soldiers around. Unfortunately, this was just about all that Cloud was good at- as a soldier, he was a failure. He was never able to come to terms with the knowledge that the purpose of the militia was to protect by force; he was saved only by the simple fact that the kingdom had seen next to no fighting for decades. As such, Cloud has yet to actually draw his sword in the heat of a real battle, and he does not look forwards to the day when he knows he will eventually have to. Even so, his talent with the blade was enough to see him carried through the ranks of the militia and somehow, he found himself becoming a knight at the age of twenty. He was, however, always slightly uncomfortable around the nobility, in part because he was conscious about his own lower class upbringing, and in part because he simply did not fit into the court with the same ease that most of the other knights did. As a knight he was quiet, always standing somewhere in the background, silently giving what support he could. He didn't see how he would be able to make a difference in anything, sometimes, but he tried not to let himself get too discouraged. Cloud Strife was never meant for great things, after all- but some have greatness thrust upon them. |
| How infinite in faculty |
It is not hard to find Cloud Strife, even in a city of Narborough's size. As a knight, he trains often, and is normally located within the castle's training halls, sword in hand. He rarely enters the more opulent areas of the castle, uncomfortable in the presence of the nobility and those above him in status. He is not wont to visit the outlying city for long, and should he be seen there, he is more often than not on some errand of his Prince's. On the rare occasion that he is there of his own accord, he tries to stay away from the places he was brought up in, somehow finding himself ashamed to walk in the slums as a knight. He does not drink on a regular basis, but he has tried alcohol more than once and dislikes its taste. As he is of a reticent nature, Cloud is normally taken to be not of any importance- but it should nonetheless not be forgotten that he became a knight through sheer strength of skill alone. Even though he has yet to fight on a battlefield, he is not an opponent to be underestimated. Cloud is not personally committed to any of the four princes. He is, however, a knight of Jephry and as such counts his words to be of more personal importance to him than the words of any of the other princes, and has until the present day obeyed the few orders given to him by the prince without question. |
